Why Installation Matters More Than the Window Brand

Homeowners spend weeks comparing window brands and five minutes thinking about who installs them. After years on the tools, I'd tell you to flip that.

Here's the truth the big-box ads won't tell you: the brand on the sticker matters far less than the hands that put the window in the wall. I've seen premium windows leak and fail because they were rushed in, and I've seen mid-priced windows perform flawlessly for decades because they were set right. The install is the product.

What “installed right” actually means

  • Flashing. The layered barrier that directs water away from the opening. Done wrong — or skipped — and water finds its way into your wall. This is the number-one cause of the leaks I get called to fix.
  • Insulation around the frame. The gap between the window and the rough opening has to be sealed with the right insulation. Skip it and you get drafts and lost efficiency, no matter how good the glass is.
  • Shimming, level, and square. A window that isn't set perfectly level and square will bind, leak, and wear out its seals early. This is slow, careful work — and it's exactly what rushed crews skip.
  • Proper sealing and trim. The final weather seal and clean finishing are what keep the install watertight and looking sharp for years.

A simple way to think about it: the window is the part you can see. The install is the part you can't — and it's the part that fails first when someone cuts corners.

Why this is personal for us

Andrus Window Co. wasn't started by a salesman — it was built by someone who spent years on ladders watching the difference between a great install and a bad one. Every install we do is hand-done by our own crew, by the book, the slow way on purpose. We don't sub it out to the lowest bidder, because shortcuts always show up later — usually as a phone call from a homeowner who trusted the wrong crew. You can read more about how we got started.

Questions to ask any installer

Before you sign with anyone, ask: Do your own employees do the install, or is it subcontracted? How do you flash and insulate around the opening? What does your workmanship warranty cover, and for how long? If they can't answer plainly, keep looking.

That's the standard we hold ourselves to. See how we install and finish every job, or get a free estimate and judge for yourself.
